What Is Open Now on the Bellingham Waterfront

Boardwalk's grand opening was held on August 20, 2026. The building sits next to Waypoint Park, waterfront trails, and the Granary Building. The Port of Bellingham lists Waypoint Park and the waterfront trails as completed public spaces. These areas are open for buyers to walk now, independent of any future construction phases nearby.

What Is Still Part of the Long-Term Waterfront Plan

Boardwalk is one of three planned buildings: Waypoint, Boardwalk, and Horizon. The Port Commission approved them in March 2018, with restaurant and retail space planned at street level. The Waterfront District covers 237 acres on the former Georgia-Pacific mill site. The Port and City are developing it in phases over 40 to 50 years. The district is still evolving.

What to Ask Before You Buy a Unit

Before you decide, ask about the exact unit you want. Check the homeowners' association documents. Confirm the actual view from that unit, not just marketing photos. Ask which parking and storage spaces are assigned to it. Ask what construction and noise to expect nearby, and what completion plans remain. Ask about monthly dues and how reserves are funded.

What the Cascadia Rail Study Does (and Does Not) Mean

WSDOT is studying a possible high-speed rail line linking Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland. No routes or stations have been chosen. The study has $49.7 million in federal funding and $5.5 million in state matching funds, with a service plan expected by 2028. This is planning work only. No train is built, and no Bellingham station is guaranteed.

Who Considers Boardwalk Residences

Boardwalk sits near Bellingham Bay, Waypoint Park, and the waterfront trails. It suits buyers who want a finished, low-maintenance residence close to open public waterfront space, including those weighing a move from Seattle or the Eastside, or a second home near the water. Buyers who need finished retail and dining nearby now should weigh the district's phased timeline.

Source and Current-Status Note

Facts here come from the official Boardwalk Residences page, the Port of Bellingham, and WSDOT, current as of August 20, 2026. Waterfront District construction continues in phases, and conditions near the building may change. Confirm current details directly with a private tour before deciding.

Q2Is the whole Bellingham waterfront finished?+

No. The Waterfront District covers 237 acres and is being redeveloped in phases expected to span 40 to 50 years. Waypoint Park and the waterfront trails are open now. Many other planned restaurants, shops, and buildings are still to come.

Q3Will a high-speed train reach Bellingham?+

Not yet, and not for certain. WSDOT is studying a Vancouver-to-Portland high-speed rail corridor, with a service plan expected by 2028. No routes or stations are chosen. Treat it as a long-range possibility, not a reason to buy.

Q4What should I check before buying a unit?+

Ask for the homeowners' association documents, the exact view from your specific unit, which parking and storage spaces are assigned to it, expected construction and noise nearby, and current monthly dues and reserve funding.

Q5Who is Boardwalk built for?+

It suits buyers who want a finished, low-maintenance home near Bellingham Bay, Waypoint Park, and the waterfront trails. This includes downsizers, relocation buyers, and second-home buyers evaluating a move from Seattle or the Eastside.
